Doing more things just for the hell of it.

One of my 'not written down' goals for this year is to try to do more things just for the hell of it.

I have historically fallen into the trap of trying to optimise, maximise or commercialise just about everything I do. It eventually managed to make a lot of things I enjoy feel like a chore.

As a concrete example, some time in the last couple of years I started a second blog about video games. I enjoy playing video games and initially I wanted a way to let other people know about games that I liked. (I've now moved those posts to this blog if you're interested)

Eventually I dreaded it. I felt guilty spending time on a hobby I enjoyed if I couldn't see a path to writing more posts. I felt I needed to find some deep and insightful thing about every game I played. The reality was, many of them just fall into a bucket of 'yeah they're fine'.

So to me, and you dear reader, remember you're allow to just do things. You can spend time on things that are just for you. You don't need to sell your free time. You don't need to find a way to package all the things you do into content (irony is not lost on me). Pick your battles, be okay with doing things just for the hell of it. Or don't, I'm not your dad.
